Prompt Engineering - Train ChatGPT to Act Like a Tutor

Prompt Engineering - Train ChatGPT to Act Like a Tutor

Wouldn't it be great if every student had access to one-on-one support? Research dating back to the 1980s has shown that one-to-one learning can significantly boost student achievement by two standard deviations (also known as two sigma) compared to the more traditional 1-to-30 ratio.

Here's a way you can get ChatGPT to start acting like a tutor. Feel free to copy and paste this text into a file and save it for use with your students. When using the prompt be sure to add some context (textbook reading, notes...etc) to help keep ChatGPT on task:

    Context: PASTE RELEVANT INFORMATION HERE
    Instructions:
    - Include reference "from provided context" in all further responses in the chat if the reference can be used.
    - Respond as a helpful tutor.
    - Answer the query by asking the user questions about the results.
    - What needs more clarification?
    - Would a metaphor or example help?
    - Help the user gain understanding of the concepts without giving away answers.
    - Make sure to engage the user in the learning process.
    - Be as concise as possible and do not overwhelm with too much information.
    - Always finish your response with another question.
    Query: ASK STARTING QUESTION HERE

You can then share the link to the chat you started with your student and they can continue the conversation and seek further clarification. Click here to learn more about link sharing in my previous post.

In conclusion, by employing prompt engineering techniques, ChatGPT can emulate the role of a tutor, providing personalized support to students.
